RD’s perspective on lymphedema

Lymphedema is likened to a silent assassin in that it sneaks up on you and then you become prey. The condition itself has many faces and takes on personalities of its own. For some it attacks the arms, in others the leg and in other folks other areas of the body. But like any other attack it can thwarted and held at bay if you are proactive in seeking treatment. When I say proactive, I mean talking with your health care professional team and figuring out a course of action that best suits your individual needs. Each of us responds differently to health challenges, but lymphedema can lead to infections and if left untreated these infections will put you in the hospital or possibly in the ground. Lymphedema is a serious condition but can be managed through lymphatic massage, wrapping, diet and exercise. Speak to your doctor and get started on the path to wellness because this disease will require your best effort to keep it under control. Connect with a trusted lymphatic therapist and develop a relationship of trust and communication because even though they help with treatment you are the expert on you and your body. Working together with your therapist you will be on the way to better health and stability in managing your condition.
